Embrace Your Creativity with Guest Bios

Happy 2023! Over the next few months, I will be focusing on sharing information revolving around tips for hosts—practical information you can use to improve your skills as a podcast host, create quality content, and as a result, grow your show.

First up, a tip that will help you stand out from the crowd and show off your guests in the best way possible.

Instead of reading your guest’s formal bio “word-for-word” when introducing them, do this:

Introduce guests based on what they will share on the show, what resonated with you about them, and why you think they’re an asset to the community. Reference any specific credentials and pertinent information to establish credibility—but refrain from reading bios word for word.

Why is this important, and how will it help you stand out?

It is highly plausible that a guest on your show will have been a guest on another show in the recent past. If this particular guest is doing a podcast tour, chances are they have had their formal bio read numerous times. After a while, the guest most likely tunes out their formal introduction.

So, for starters, if you skew the introduction to something that resonates with you (about the guest) and put more of your creative spin on the intro—the guest will take notice. They will be excited and eager to chat—realizing—this may not be like all of the other interviews they’ve done recently. Perhaps this host has something more to offer. This will be fun!

Second, mixing the intro up to put your spin on it also helps the audience connect with you and your guest plus understand better where the show will go.

For example, when introducing a guest, your instinct may be to read their guest bio and state they have a doctorate in psychology, have appeared in numerous magazines and newspapers, and is a TEDx speaker—that’s great. But what if you included the fact that they recently completed a study on apes and their young, which explored the differences and similarities between apes and other mammals when it comes to parental instincts, AND your podcast is about personal development and parenting— that is FAR more intriguing and helpful to set the stage for the episode.

You can include any specific credentials in your introduction of the guest as it relates to the episode. Always have the full formal bio in the episode description/show notes so that listeners can learn more and do their research on your guest or guests.

Give it a try. Don’t shy away from using the provided bio and making it your own.
